I absolutely love baking bread. Nothing beats the aroma of freshly baked bread wafting through the house – it’s pure heaven! And while there are plenty of ways to make homemade bread, one of my favorite methods is to use a Dutch oven. It might seem intimidating at first, but trust me, it’s actually quite easy and the end result is a beautiful loaf with a crispy crust and soft, fluffy interior.
To get started, you’ll need a few key ingredients: flour, yeast, salt, and water. The ratio is usually 3 cups of flour to 1.5 cups of water, but this can vary depending on the recipe you’re using. I like to add a pinch of sugar to my dough as well, just to help activate the yeast.
Once you have your ingredients measured out, it’s time to mix them together. I like to use my KitchenAid mixer with the dough hook attachment, but you can also mix everything by hand if you don’t have a mixer. The dough should be wet and shaggy, but not too sticky. If it’s too dry, add a bit more water. If it’s too wet, add a bit more flour.
Next, you’ll want to let your dough rise. This is where a Dutch oven comes in handy. While your dough is rising, preheat your Dutch oven in the oven at 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Once your dough has doubled in size, carefully remove your Dutch oven from the oven (remember, it’s hot!) and place your dough inside. Cover with the lid and bake for about 30 minutes. Remove the lid and bake for another 10-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and crispy.
And that’s it! You’ll have a gorgeous loaf of bread that is sure to impress. I like to serve my Dutch oven bread with a bit of butter and honey, but it’s also great for sandwiches or as a side dish for soup or stew.
