Today, I want to share my favorite recipe for chocolate cake balls. These little treats are perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth and they’re actually quite easy to make! First, preheat your oven to 350°F and prepare a chocolate cake mix according to the instructions on the package. Once the cake is baked and cooled, crumble it into a large mixing bowl.
Now, it’s time to get messy! Add a half cup of frosting (I prefer chocolate) to the crumbled cake and mix it together with your hands until you have a dough-like consistency. Using a small cookie scoop, form the dough into balls and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Then, pop the sheet into the fridge for about 30 minutes to chill.
While the cake balls are cooling, you can start working on the chocolate coating. Simply melt a package of chocolate chips (I like to use semi-sweet, but milk chocolate and dark chocolate work, too) in a microwave-safe bowl, stirring every 30 seconds until completely melted and smooth.
Once your cake balls are chilled, start dipping them into the melted chocolate. I find it’s easiest to use a fork to coat them completely, then tap the fork gently on the edge of the bowl to remove any excess chocolate. Place each ball back onto the parchment-lined baking sheet and sprinkle with your favorite toppings (I like to use chopped nuts or sprinkles).
To finish, let the chocolate coating harden in the fridge for at least 15 minutes. Once they’re set, they’re ready to enjoy! I love serving these at parties or as a sweet snack during movie night. They’re also a great gift idea for friends or coworkers.
